Too often, we spend our time magnifying the minor things in Scripture while neglecting the weightier matters. We become consumed with debates over secondary issues while overlooking the core of our faith—the Great Commission. This misalignment keeps us from fulfilling God’s ultimate purpose and can distort the true message of the gospel.
Missing the Main Message
Jesus was clear about what matters most. When asked about the greatest commandment, He responded:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39)
Yet, many believers focus on issues like prosperity, prophecy timelines, and minor doctrinal differences rather than emphasizing love, salvation, discipleship, and justice—the very things Jesus prioritized.
Biblical Emphasis vs. Modern Church Focus
The Bible maintains a balanced focus on key life topics, yet modern churches often amplify certain topics disproportionately. Let’s examine this discrepancy:
Biblical Topic Breakdown
- God’s Nature & Worship (28%) – Understanding God’s character, holiness, and sovereignty.
- Salvation & Redemption (20%) – The gospel message of Jesus, forgiveness, and eternal life.
- Moral and Ethical Living (14%) – How we are called to live righteously and walk in obedience.
- Relationships & Community (10%) – Love, marriage, unity, and church fellowship.
- Missions & The Great Commission (9%) – The call to disciple nations, send workers, and expand the church globally.
- Prophecy & The End Times (7%) – Warnings, Christ’s return, and eschatology.
- Suffering, Trials & Spiritual Growth (6%) – Faith-building through challenges.
- Finances & Stewardship (6%) – Money, generosity, and ethical financial practices.
What is Typically Emphasized in Churches Today?
Surveys and observations suggest that many churches tend to overemphasize certain topics while neglecting others:
- Prosperity & Financial Blessing (28%) – Often taught as a primary sign of God’s favor; wealth, success, and abundance
- End Times & Prophecy (19%) – Many churches obsess over eschatology, fueling fear rather than faith.
- Moral & Cultural Issues (19%) – Focus on political or cultural debates rather than transformation through Christ.
- Personal Breakthrough & Blessings (14%) – Self-improvement and success-oriented faith; favor and open doors
- Discipleship & Spiritual Maturity (9%) – Neglected despite being the foundation of faith; focus should be growing in faith, holiness, and sound doctrine
- Local Evangelism (5%) – Outreach within immediate communities
- The Great Commission – Holisitic (4%) – Discipling nations, raising leaders, and church planting
- Global Missions (2%) – Sending missionaries, supporting unreached people groups.
🚨 The contrast is clear:
While prosperity, prophecy, and personal breakthroughs have their place, their overemphasis shifts focus from God’s greater plan—discipling nations and fulfilling the Great Commission.
The Consequence of Imbalance
When we major in the minors, we:
- Divide the Church over trivial matters instead of fostering unity (1 Corinthians 1:10).
- Neglect Discipleship, leading to shallow faith and spiritual immaturity (Hebrews 5:12-14).
- Lose Sight of the Lost, focusing inward while ignoring the world’s need for salvation (Matthew 28:19-20).
What Truly Matters?
If we study Scripture holistically, we see recurring themes of worship, salvation, ethical living, community, stewardship, and perseverance. These are the matters that shape our faith and fulfill Christ’s mission.
Paul warned about becoming distracted by debates, urging us instead to focus on “sound doctrine” and godly living (Titus 3:9-10). Jesus Himself rebuked the Pharisees for their obsession with minor laws while ignoring “justice, mercy, and faithfulness” (Matthew 23:23).
The Great Commission: Our True Focus
The last command Jesus gave before ascending to heaven was:
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20)
The Great Commission is not just about evangelism. It includes:
- Sending missionaries to unreached people groups.
- Discipling believers to obey Christ’s teachings.
- Establishing churches to strengthen new believers.
- Training leaders to multiply the gospel impact.
Missions is not just an activity—it is the heartbeat of God’s plan for the world.
This is our mission. Anything that distracts from it is a detour from God’s true purpose.
A Call to Realignment
Are you spending more time arguing theology than living it out? Are you prioritizing religious preferences over evangelism and missions? Let’s shift our focus back to what matters—loving God, loving people, and making disciples.
